April 20, 2004 - Opolis - Norman, OK
On the drive to Norman, OK, we stopped at a Carl's Jr. in Guthrie, OK and picked up some burgers for dinner, our first fast food so far. Guthrie seemed like a nice town with big houses and bigger front and back yards than I've seen in a long time. Oklahoma City's skyline was visible from the road and there was a crazy looking cloud in the distance morphing as the sun set; Dan and Chris W. tried to take pictures of it. When we got to Norman we heard that there were tornado warnings in effect. There was lightning in the distance and the air was warm and it felt like summer. Opolis has wireless internet, so I checked email during the soundcheck. We played with Muggabears and their bass player is a very entertaining dancer. The ceiling fans in Opolis felt great. I'd never played a show wearing a tank top before, but I did last night. The weather seemed appropriate. A guy named Scott took a ton of digital photos of all the bands and he showed me some of the ones he took of us. His pictures are just like I remember the night to be. Budweiser was only $1 at Opolis. Pacific UV, who we'll play with in Fayetteville, played after us, with cool guitar effects. Scott told us about the tornado warning before we took off for Tulsa, which we thought, from reading the AAA map of the USA, was about an hour away. It turned out to be about 2 hours north and there was thick fog on the highway, like we were driving through the land of unicorns and centaurs. We got off the highway on Exit 231 to stay at the Best Western and the guy at the front desk was very nice and said, "That's a long way to go," when we told him that we were driving across the country.
