April 19, 2004 - The Eighth Street Tap Room - Lawrence, KS
The weather was good in Lawrence. We got into town around 7 and Chris W. checked out The Tap Room and the 24-hour coffee shop next door. We walked around the downtown, which was really nice, with wide clean streets and lots of shops, restaurants, and about 3 clubs. The Distillers were playing at the largest club, and Pinback and Enon were playing too. We saw The Distillers' big tour bus and were a little jealous. After looking at all the restaurants on the main street, we decided to eat in The Mad Greek Italian. It was good and there was a lot of Greek d??cor: life-size dolls, small dolls, a painting of a naked man with strange definition in the private area. Leslie, who set up the show, called around 9 when she got off work, a place that sells records, incense, bongs, and canopy beds. We met her and Paul at Little Henry's, the 24-hour caf?? next door to the 8th Street Tap Room. Chris W. rewired the caf'??s internet set-up so that we could get wireless there. It was raining a little, but it was so warm we sat outside anyway. At 11 we went next door to the Tap Room and stepped downstairs to see the first band play and they were great'we couldn't believe it was only their third show. I also couldn't believe that the bands that play are treated to "all you can drink tap beer." Delightful news. High Dive rocked the house, an exciting combination of bass, guitar, vocals and excellent drumming.
After the show Chris W. stayed all night at the caf?? and the rest of us went to Leslie and the twins' house to eat some spicy vegetarian spaghetti and drink Budweisers. They have a velvet painting of Kiss in their living room. There were flashes of lightning in the sky and when we went outside to sit on the porch birds began to sing. It was almost 4 a.m.
