April 16, 2004 - Kilby Court - Salt Lake City, UT
I think I accidentally changed the time on the hotel room clock radio because it was an hour behind when we woke up and the alarm I set didn't go off. There was a rush to get on the road, as we were pretty sure that Utah was on Mountain Time. Dan and Chris W. called the time lady in Reno and someplace else to ask, and both of the time ladies said that Utah was on the same time as Nevada, but Nevada, or Reno anyway, seemed to be on the same time as California. It was confusing. We had lunch at Dos Amigos in Elko, Nevada, and afterwards went to Smith's, a big grocery store, to buy beer and the DVD of Romancing The Stone, and Carla, the lady putting our goods in a bag, told us that Utah was an hour ahead. That made us an hour late in getting to Kilby Court, where we were playing an early all ages show at 6:30. Luckily, things were running late, and Seve Vs. Evan had just started when we got to Kilby Court. Seve Vs. Evan were SO GREAT. We loved them and wish they had a CD. A man named Vaughn took pictures of all the bands. He wore kneepads.
We left the show after The Brobecks played a cool set. One of Seve's friends from high school told us where to find a Thai restaurant and we cruised in the mini-van through downtown Salt Lake City, saw the Mormon Temple, called a bunch of motels in the AAA book looking for free internet access and free continental breakfast. We finally found Bangkok Thai in a big shopping center and made it inside just before they closed. Natch, our waiter, suggested a wine from the list and we agreed that it would go nicely with the chicken. However, after we were nearly done eating, he returned to inform us that the wine we'd just finished drinking cost $70! This was a problem. We learned that in the state of Utah, alcohol cannot be sold in a restaurant unless people eat food. Still, the manager and the rest of the staff, who knew about the miscommunication situation, were able to swing it so that we only paid for the wine, not the food, and they brought us fried bananas and ice cream and candy bars to make up for the difference. Chris G. found a Days Inn in South Salt Lake City with free internet access; we were checked in at the front desk by Stefani, and drank beer in our motel room while watching a crazy woman on TV get plastic surgery to make her look just like Britney Spears.
