March 14, 2004 - Gypsy Tea Room, The - Dallas, TX

Plains plains and more plains. That was today's drive. All 10 hours of it. At the Texas border, we realized that we forgot about the time change. Whoops. It makes us later to the show than planned, but not too late to play. The Gypsy Tea Room is run very professionally by a bunch of very cheery people. They help us unload our stuff, put it on dollies, and get it up on stage. No later than 20 minutes after arriving, we're already on stage and ready to play. We're playing with Film School and their tourmates, Low Flying Owls. The combo of Sunday night plus three out-of-town bands doesn't make for much of a crowd, but it still ends up being a fun show. Another 30 minutes later, we've finished playing, making the whole experience seem a bit surreal.

There's a certain comfort and fun in playing with a band from home in a foreign place, especially one you like. Film School's set sounds great, and we have a little time after the show to chat and compare tour sagas. We check out their new tour van, which has some hot red vinyl seats. Nice. They demonstrate the new nerf football prowess they've developed on the road. I'm sensing the beginning of an indie football league. San Francisco Hoodies vs. Seattle Scarves, anyone? Perhaps I'll pitch the idea in Austin.
