May 24, 2005 - The Engine Room - Brighton, UK

This afternoon I saw the aftermath of the worst car crash I've ever seen in my life on the way to Brighton in the pouring rain, tangles of metal that were barely recognizable as an automobile was flattened against a directional sign on the opposite stretch of the motorway, the emergency crew rushing to the gnarled mess only to discover that there was nothing they could do. During our sound check at the Engine Room, the sound engineer and owner of the club, Neil, informed us that the club was haunted and I wondered if the ghosts of the people killed today would be visiting, as I really don't want to think that it is over for them. Perhaps, with modern medicine and automobile physics, they're still with us.
For dinner we were treated to Lauren's homemade soup and brown bread, the ideal meal for the drizzling rain and force 7 winds outside. The underground Engine Room is across the street from a delapidated pier, a vital stretch of its skeleton crumbled into the choppy seawater. There are 4 red booths inside the Engine Room and we set up merch in one (that Neil told us is not haunted) and then drank beers in the one furthest back in the club as Neil played horror film theme scores through the PA. Daniel's Northcross were on first, as he played guitar though CG's bass amp and was accompanied by Mike on guitar, with flute, violin, and clarinet, Daniel's booming and haunting voice not even needing to be miked as it carried through the rooms. It was excellent, to see him, as it's been 2 weeks since we met in Manchester.
When we went on, people who had been sitting in the front stood up and I hoped it wasn't to leave, and they didn't. They stood and watched and some danced. Or perhaps those were the ghosts dancing.
