We took the tram back into Amsterdam and ate lunch at Hansel and Gretel's as the sun came and went, then bought tickets to the comedy show Boom Chicago for tomorrow night which we're going to with Aunt Maggy. Near Coffee Shop The Other Side the computer picked up free wireless, so we checked email and posted some more pictures while drinking Coronas outside Los Amigos. Chris G. was also online somewhere else in the city and emailed. CW made dinner reservations for all of us to meet up at 9 p.m. at Werck.
Suffering from a craving for sweets, Dan and I walked the city at 6 pm only to discover that all quality snack places shut down at 5. All the cakes and apple pies we'd seen throughout the day were now locked behind glass windows. Feeling hopeless, we got lost and disoriented, until discovering Croissointerie C'est Magnifique, where we shared a slice of Dutch apple pie and bought hot drinks. Chris G. called and met us there.
We walked toward Werck and then beyond it to a cafe where we enjoyed beers by the canal until 9 pm. Chris W and Mai were already at the restaurant and we joined them at our table. The restaurant was impressive, almost like a glass building that loosely follows the old IHOP buildings, chalet style almost, with angles and planes and stairs. There was a DJ who played songs from our childhoods. We ordered our starters and I tried bisque, which I'd never had before. It tasted like the ocean and was delicious.
Around 11 it became clear that Werck was no longer a restaurant but a nightclub. A Brigette Nielsen look-alike demanded 50 cents entry fee for using the restroom, which had been free before. Ladies wearing sleeveless blouses, fingernail polish, and jewelry began to crowd the bar area, talking with men in blazers who wore Dockers. After hot drinks and desserts we escaped this spooky singles scene, well fed and ready to go to the Other Side.
