May 7, 2005 - Le Pub - Newport, Wales
It was noon when I woke up, later than expected. We went to our fave, Laroash Kebabs, in Ealing and then loaded up the van. The spicy sauce is very good and I without mayo I feel strongly that the Laroash chicken kebab is the best. I hate mayo.
The drive to Wales was beautiful but the nine dollar toll to cross a bridge was surprising. We were glad we weren't charged the larger vehicle rate, which translated to about $20. Can't really complain about the Bay Bridge at home costing $3 anymore. We passed the ruins of Newport Castle on our way to the venue.
Owain and Lee were at Le Pub when we got there and helped us to load in up the stairs. It's either upstairs or downstairs here, rarely do we play on the same level we enter a venue through. We did a sound check and then ate the delicious dinner Owain had made: pizza, pasta and salad. Downstairs we heard a new British Sea Power song in the bar and reviewed the map of the UK with Phil from Panel. Despite it being a Saturday night, the show started at 9 ish when Panel went on. I really like this two band bill set-up, with the show not going until 2 a.m. We went on around 10:30, stepped onto the wooden stage in the attic of the building. What is on the street level? The bar is underground & the venue is on the 2nd floor. It's a mystery. We reached record CD sales in Newport and there was even dancing which was super. At eleven or just after we loaded up the van and Owain came along with us, directing us to his house in Cardiff where we slept on the top floor after CW ate a tikka masala.
